Sport Studies (OCR J829)

Sport Studies at King’s Academy Ringmer is a Level 1/2 vocational qualification designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the sports industry, combining theoretical knowledge with practical application. The course is structured around three key units: R184 (Contemporary Issues in Sport), R185 (Performance and Leadership), and R186 (Sport and the Media), each contributing to a well-rounded education in sport.

The R184 unit explores current topics affecting the sports world, including health and fitness, the role of sport in society, and the impact of technology and media. Students develop an awareness of ethical issues, sports governance, and the importance of inclusivity and diversity in sport.

In R185, students focus on developing their practical skills in performance and leadership. This unit encourages teamwork, communication, and strategic thinking as students participate in sports activities and take on leadership roles. They learn to plan, lead, and evaluate sports sessions, fostering confidence and organisational skills.

The R186 unit examines the relationship between sport and the media, exploring how sports events are covered, marketed, and consumed by audiences. Students analyse the influence of media on public perceptions of sport and consider careers in sports journalism, broadcasting, and marketing.

Assessment combines coursework and a written exam, with grading from Level 1 Pass to Level 2 Distinction*. This structure allows students to demonstrate both their practical abilities and theoretical understanding.

Studying Sport Studies at Ringmer equips students with valuable skills such as leadership, communication, and critical thinking. It provides a strong foundation for further education in sports science, coaching, physiotherapy, or sports management, as well as opportunities for careers in the vibrant sports industry.

The course is ideal for students passionate about sport who wish to develop both their practical talents and academic knowledge in a supportive and dynamic learning environment.
