    Dear parent / carer

    Year 11 last day

Following an amazing Year 11 leavers assembly and short signing last week, Year 11s and staff were treated to a free well-deserved ice cream.

HUGGG Vouchers – Reminder they finished after the May2026 school closure

The government-funded Household Support Fund, which was distributed by Councils to support residents in East Sussex, ended nationally on 31 March 2026. This included the holiday supermarket voucher scheme (HUGGG vouchers) for students eligible for benefits-related free school meals.

From 1 April 2026, the government introduced the new Crisis and Resilience Fund. The new fund takes a different approach, with support focused on households experiencing immediate financial hardship or crisis, alongside help to build longer-term financial resilience.

East Sussex County Council took a decision to fund HUGGG vouchers for the April and May school holiday as part of a transition to the new arrangements.

As a result of these national changes to the Fund, the Council will no longer be distributing holiday vouchers to all students solely based on free school meal eligibility. Being eligible for free school meals will not automatically mean a household is entitled to a voucher or payment under the new fund.

Support for families continues to be available, but it will be assessed based on individual household circumstances and need.  Families can find out more about support available through these links:

    Crisis and Resilience Fund

    Cost of living support

Families eligible for free school meals can get free activities and food through Holiday food and fun.

The Cash for Kids Holiday Hunger Grants scheme supports children and young people (up to 18 years old) facing food insecurity during the school holidays. Schools can apply and projects must focus on outcomes that encourage children to eat more healthily and be more active during the school holidays. Please see the Grant Application - Cash for Kids.

    Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope you have had a good week.

Firstly, thank you to all the parents, carers and families who attended our Summer Showcase on Wednesday evening. It was an incredible evening and once again showcased the very best of KAR through dance, drama and music.

The pride in the room was tangible, with a packed audience supporting our amazing students. A total of 65 students took part in the evening, which is around 10% of our school! To see so many children from Years 7 to 11 perform with such confidence, courage and passion was a real testament to their dedication.

A huge thank you also goes to all the staff who supported the evening, especially Ms Bailey and Ms Urquhart, whose exceptional work continues to provide such a brilliant platform for our students. The creative spark is very much alive and well at KAR!

Today, we also bid goodbye to Year 11. They have been a fantastic year group and we wish them every success for the future. Their final day includes the leavers’ assembly, shirt signing and, of course, a visit from the ice cream van to provide some well-earned treats.

Finally, the process is now well underway for Year 10 students applying for student leadership roles. We have already received a large number of applications, which is fantastic to see, and we look forward to interviewing students over the next few weeks.

    Have a great weekend

    Best wishes,

    Mr Harvey

    Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope you have had a great week.

I wanted to take the opportunity to thank our Year 7 students for the mature and responsible manner in which they have embraced the introduction of our revised mobile phone arrangements. Since the start of the trial, students have handed in their phones each morning and, I am delighted to report, the process has been exceptionally smooth with no issues reported to date.

Perhaps most pleasingly, we have already noticed some positive changes around the school. Students are interacting more with one another, engaging positively during social times and demonstrating the excellent character and values that we are so proud of at King's Academy Ringmer. It has also been noticeable that there has been a reduction in parent-student communication during the school day, which can sometimes unintentionally escalate or prolong issues that are more effectively resolved by students and staff within school. This has helped to ensure that students remain focused on learning and fully immersed in school life.

I would like to thank Year 7 students, staff and parents for their support in making the implementation such a success. We will continue to review the arrangements over the coming weeks, but the early signs are very encouraging and reflect the maturity and cooperation of our young people.

Looking ahead, we are very much looking forward to our Summer Showcase next Wednesday 17th June from 6.00pm to 8.00pm in the Hall. This promises to be another wonderful evening and an opportunity to celebrate the incredible talents of our students through a range of music, dance and drama performances. Events such as these remind us of the breadth of talent within our school community and the confidence and creativity our students display. We have close to around 50 students participating in the evening across Years 7-11, an outstanding number considering the size of our school! We are proud to continue to promote our creative and talented young people. If you have secured a ticket, we look forward to welcoming you and sharing what promises to be a fantastic evening.

As the exam season reaches its conclusion next week for Year 11, a special mention to Ms. King, who has again done some fantastic work in ensuring that students and staff have everything they need for the exams. This has been recognised not just internally, but by providers we use externally where support has been put in to ensure all students have access to their exams.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support.

    Best wishes,

    Mr Harvey

    Navigating Teen Digital Lives

The Children’s Commissioner has released a practical guide titled "What I Wish My Parents Knew," aimed at supporting parents as they manage the complexities of their children's digital lives.

With direct input from young people, the publication offers an honest look at how teenagers experience the online world and provides straightforward advice on how families can approach screen time and internet safety together.

Rather than advocating for outright bans, the guide encourages open communication and realistic boundaries, focusing on key areas such as:

    • Managing digital habits: Understanding smartphone use, the temptation of constant scrolling, and how to establish healthy screen-free routines

    • Open communication: Practical tips from teens on how to talk about their online experiences without making them feel judged or defensive.

    • Setting collaborative boundaries: How to implement firm but fair digital rules that respect a teenager's growing independence while keeping them safe.

The guide and its accompanying youth activity pack are free to access and serve as a useful tool for any parent looking to better understand and support their teen's digital world.

    Dear parents and carers,

I hope you have had a great week.

As we move towards the end of another busy and successful academic year, I wanted to take a moment to celebrate some fantastic achievements across our school community.

Eco Green Flag Award – With Distinction!

I am also delighted to share some fantastic news. King's Academy Ringmer has once again been awarded the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award – and this year we have achieved it with Distinction.

This is a tremendous accomplishment and reflects the commitment of our students and staff to environmental responsibility and sustainability. A particular thank you must go to Ms Simon-House, whose passion, leadership and dedication have helped drive this work forward so successfully.

The assessors were incredibly complimentary about the work taking place across our school. They described the development of our Eco-Hub garden and greenhouse as a ‘phenomenal achievement’ and praised the outstanding commitment shown by students in bringing the project to life.

They highlighted how these spaces provide valuable opportunities for students to develop practical skills, strengthen their environmental understanding and take ownership of positive change within our community.

Among the many strengths recognised were:

    • The exceptional teamwork shown by students in maintaining and developing environmental projects throughout the year.

    • Our celebration of Sir David Attenborough's 100th birthday, helps students understand the impact one individual can have on protecting our planet.

    • Curriculum projects such as Year 10 students designing and constructing birdhouses, embedding environmental learning through meaningful, hands-on experiences.

    • Student leadership through projects such as ‘The Air We Breathe’, where pupils monitored local air quality and explored important environmental issues.

    • Strong community engagement through our Eco-Page, social media channels and newsletters, ensuring environmental awareness remains at the heart of school life.

The report concluded by encouraging us to continue building on our current workaround energy and sustainability, recognising that meaningful environmental change is achieved through sustained effort over time.

What makes this award particularly special is that it reflects our school values of Honesty, Faith and Courage in action. Our students have shown honesty in understanding the challenges facing our environment, faith that positive change is possible, and courage in taking action to make a difference.

We remain incredibly proud that King's Academy Ringmer continues to be recognised as a beacon of good environmental practice, both locally and nationally.

Year 11 – So Nearly There!

Firstly, I want to say how incredibly proud we are of our Year 11 students. Over the past few weeks, they have approached their GCSE examinations with maturity, confidence and calmness. Examinations can be a challenging and sometimes stressful period, but our students have conducted themselves brilliantly, demonstrating resilience and a real commitment to achieving their best.

There is now not long to go before they can celebrate the end of their secondary school journey and enjoy the many memorable events that lie ahead, including the Leavers' Assembly, Prom and a well-earned summer break. We wish them every success as they complete their final examinations and look forward to celebrating with them in the weeks ahead.

Summer Showcase - Wednesday 17th June

Finally, we are very excited about our upcoming Summer Showcase, taking place on  Wednesday 17th June from 6.00pm to 8.00pm. Details of how to obtain tickets can be found here:

The evening will celebrate the incredible talents of our students through music, dance and drama performances. Events like these are always a highlight of the school calendar and provide a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together and celebrate student achievement.

We would be delighted to see as many families as possible there and hope you will be able to join us for what promises to be a fantastic evening.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support.

King’s Academy Ringmer - Wellbeing Team

As we approach half-term, we want to take a moment to reflect on the importance of supporting our children’s mental health and overall wellbeing. This time of year can bring a mixture of excitement and tiredness, and many students benefit from a chance to rest, reset, and reconnect with the things that help them feel grounded.

Through assemblies for each year group this term, we have been encouraging students to talk openly about their feelings, recognise when they need support and how they can access that in school, and make use of positive strategies such as taking breaks, spending time outdoors, and speaking to a trusted adult when something is worrying them. We hope the half-term holiday gives them space to continue these healthy habits at home.

If you notice that your child seems overwhelmed, anxious, or unusually withdrawn, please do reach out. We are here to help, and we want every student to feel safe, supported, and understood. Sometimes a simple conversation can make a meaningful difference.

We also encourage families to use the break to prioritise rest and connection. Small things, such as shared meals, time away from screens, fresh air, or a relaxed chat – can have a big impact on a young person’s sense of wellbeing.

Please see the links below for advice and support for parents and young people that may be useful over the half-term break.  Wishing you all a restful half term, The Wellbeing Team.

Design and Technology and Food Technology Departments

Design and Technology and Food Nutrition hosted their first Celebration Event for their Year 11 students. The event allowed the students to show off their work to parents and school staff.

‘We are exceptionally proud of the Year 11’s commitment to their studies and this celebration gave a much-needed morale boost following their first round of GCSE examinations.’

Mrs Budd and Mrs Hepburn would like to additionally thank the parents for being so engaged throughout their children’s NEA component.

    ECO Hub – Super Curriculum

Students were delighted to find a stunning and enormous Privet Hawkmoth whilst in the Eco Hub Garden during Super Curriculum. We used the iNaturalist app to log the photograph of this beautiful moth. iNaturalist is a citizen scientist app that connects with expert naturalists, and helps verify and identify species. Shared observations are used for science and conservation to protect biodiversity.

We are hoping to have the opportunity to log more content as our Eco Hub garden flourishes.

Reminder - Date for your diary – King’s Academy Ringmer Coffee Morning for parents / Carers

Local Ringmer event – Saturday 13 June from 5pm to 7pm (16+ only advised)

People's Emergency Briefing, in Ringmer Village Hall

A group of community members from Ringmer are co-ordinating the showing of the very recent public information film, People's Emergency Briefing, in Ringmer Village Hall on Saturday, June 13th 5-7.00pm. (16+ only advised). We would be really grateful if you would forward this invite on to other families in the village, to reach as many people as possible.

There was a conference in November in Westminster during which key experts addressed the impact of the climate crisis across all aspects of national life. The fifty-minute non-partisan PEB film, which summarises the key issues raised at the conference, is being shown to live community gatherings across the country. (The film is not being released online). The public, as well as our MP, parish and local government Councillors and as many as possible of our local contacts across environmental organisations, green energy providers, health service, agricultural businesses, retail, security and transport etc will all be invited to attend. The first aim of these events is to call on parliament to show the film on public television. Following the showing of the film and refreshments, feedback will be invited from the audience on specific areas of concern.

There is an excellent trailer for the film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tLUnWHkGG4

This is a FREE event but we request that people book online to help us know the numbers attending. The ticket link is: https://buytickets.at/ringmerstmarysecoteamandringmerrepaircafe/2161414

Perhaps the most powerful way we can provide to encourage people to come is with this quote sent to a Ringmer resident from a friend who has seen the film….

“I went to a screening of this last night. If you can go to one near you, I would highly recommend it. It's a very sobering take on where the world is at the moment. Although I knew a lot of it, seeing it presented in this way, I found it very helpful. It's more than depressing (in reality, actually truly shocking), but crucially, it contains solutions that could be taken if the political will was there to do so. https://www.nebriefing.org/aims. There were 77 people in the room, and I think everyone went away more determined to act. I know I did.”

With many thanks. Rosemary Colebourn - On behalf of members of the Ringmer St Mary's Eco Team, Ringmer Repair Café volunteers and PEB supporters.

Lewes Children's Book Group is holding their usual Book Swap on Saturday, 23rd May, 10.30am-12.30pm, at the Depot.

The event is free of charge, and they ask children to bring good-condition books that they no longer want to read and exchange them for others, essentially "swapping" books to discover new titles and authors while giving their old books a new home, all without having to buy new ones; it's a way for book lovers to share their reading material with each other and find new books to read.

It can also be an opportunity to find a love of reading. If there are children who don't have books to swap in the first place, they can just let us know, and we'll find a way of making it work.

    Published 15/05/26

    Dear parents and carers,

I hope you have had a great week.

We are immensely proud of our Year 11’s who have successfully navigated the first week of GCSE exams. They have shown maturity and an assured approach throughout the week, and we are delighted that every day has seen a great attitude from the students. They remain focussed on our drop-down timetables, where the teachers have done a very good job of guessing some of the exam questions just before they go in!

We are excited to again showcase yet more creative talent in the school in Years 7–11 with our performing arts showcase on 17th June. More details are held within this newsletter, and we hope to see you there on the evening! The performing arts remain a huge success at Ringmer, and it is fantastic to see so many students already signed up to perform.

Amongst many things happening in the Summer Term, it is an important time as we review our school budget for next year. Put simply, finances continue to be extremely challenging and it is a credit to the students and teachers that the school continues to perform so well in a very difficult national landscape. I also note a number of continued challenges locally in Sussex. Thankfully, despite the financial, local and national challenges, we are still significantly bucking the trend in all these areas and more. We have a happy and safe school (as our students and staff tell us each term), consistently strong outcomes, the highest applicants to the school on record, a large number of in-year admissions to get into the school and a motivated staff body who we again (fingers crossed) look to be heading into September fully staffed. We are not perfect and continually look to improve based on the resources we have. Our key area of focus remains improving attendance to be consistently above the national average as this gives our students the best chances of success in comparison to their peers nationally. I thank you again for your support during this challenging time for education.

    Have a great weekend

    Best wishes,

Assembly to commemorate the 100th birthday of Sir David Attenborough

Last week, Mr Weir led an assembly to commemorate the 100th birthday of Sir David Attenborough. Students learnt about his remarkable life, his decades of work as a broadcaster and naturalist, and his powerful contribution to helping people understand and care for the natural world.

The assembly linked closely to our academy value of faith, exploring the idea that we can have faith in the future when we take responsibility for the world around us. Students reflected on practical ways they can make a difference, including litter picking, spending more time in nature, noticing the surrounding wildlife, and making small daily choices that protect the environment.

We were delighted to hear that Mrs Hepburn and her daughter put this message into action over the weekend by getting involved themselves.  A wonderful example of our school values in action.  See article and picture below.

Getting outdoors and caring for the environment

Following Mr. Weir’s inspirational assembly above, we are thrilled to share a story of immediate impact. Mrs. Hepburn-Imber (Teacher of DT and Head of House System) was so inspired by the call to action that she took the mission straight to her local community.

Over the weekend, Mrs. Hepburn-Imber, her daughter, and her family headed out for a family litter-picking adventure. By spending their time clearing local green spaces, they’ve shown us exactly what it means to be stewards of our environment.  It was a fantastic way to get some fresh air while making a tangible difference. A huge well done to the whole family for leading by example!

ECO / Super Curriculum News – From seed to spoon!

Spinach grown in the school garden was the focus ingredient as students cooked spinach and cheese filo pastry parcels in Super Curriculum.

Spinach was picked from the school garden at lunchtime and students added ricotta cheese and seasoning to fold the mixture into filo to make parcels which were baked in the oven. We did try them and they were delicious!  These will be available at Ringmer Repair Café on the last Saturday at the end of the month.

    DT Department

The Design and Technology Year 11’s took part in an escape room style revision lesson. Covering key knowledge and correcting common misunderstandings. The answers turned into a number, which then correlated to a colour on a mini piano. Mrs Hepburn is pleased to say that they all ‘escaped’!  Lots of deep thinking took place in a fun and purposeful way. Well done Year 11!

The Forest Skills super curriculum students made some amazing creations this week! They had to plan their project and collect their materials before creating their masterpieces. The portrait of Danny Devito was a personal highlight, but they are all amazing.

King’s Academy Ringmer – Stop Food Waste Day 10th Anniversary

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Stop Food Waste Day, we hosted a lunchtime pop-up event at King’s Academy Ringmer on 29th April focused on raising awareness of food waste in a fun and engaging way. Students were invited to sample vegetable crisps, prompting conversations about how surplus and imperfect vegetables can be transformed into tasty snacks rather than going to waste.

The pop-up created a fantastic opportunity to engage and educate students at the source, highlighting simple actions everyone can take to reduce food waste both at school and at home. Students were extremely enthusiastic, asked thoughtful questions, and showed genuine interest in learning more about the impact of food waste.

The vegetable crisps were a huge hit, helping to reinforce the message that reducing waste doesn’t mean compromising on flavour or enjoyment.

MFL Department - Y8 Spanish role plays at the restaurant

Year 8 Spanish students have been writing and performing role plays in a restaurant this week, combining transactional Spanish with "small talk" and acting skills.  It has been fantastic to see them grow in confidence and manage to complete this task in their second language. Fantástico!  Muchas gracias

    RE Department – Year 9

For RE lessons in Year 9 this term, we have been studying Judaism.  To bring our learning to life, students were invited to a mock Sabbath meal where they were given the opportunity to drink from the kiddush and receive the challah bread.  Students reflected on the importance of this weekly event for Jewish people in our local community and the wider world.  Thank you, Mrs Simmons, Subject Leader for RE

Year 9 Explore Bright Horizons at Big Futures Fair

This week, our Year 9 students headed to Eastbourne Sports Park for the Big Futures Careers Fair. As the premier employability event in East Sussex, it provided a brilliant platform for our students to dive into their potential futures.

Whether they were diving into hands-on activities or sparking discussions with exhibitors, our students showed incredible engagement. In fact, both event staff and exhibitors reached out to comment on how exceptionally engaged and professional our Year 9s were.

Students returned to school buzzing with new ideas and a wealth of information to explore.

We are incredibly proud of how they represented our school community.

Year 8 – Chelsea Football Club Mascot

Sage, Year 8, was a mascot for the Chelsea Football Team on Bank Holiday Monday. He was put on the list at age 5 by his sister and his name just came to the top of the list. Usually, they are 5–12 years of age but during Covid, they could not offer mascot places. The football club is honouring their commitment to everyone who was previously nominated, so Sage walked out onto the Chelsea football pitch during their match on 4 May.

    Dear Parents and Carers,

    I hope you've had a great week.

A busy term has started well at KAR; the students have returned fantastically, and, of course, the good weather has helped create a positive atmosphere around the school.

We were delighted to see our school recognised in the local press as the joint 3rd best school in Sussex. We recognise that there are many ways to assess school performance, and this ranking reflects just one perspective. That said, it’s always encouraging to see the hard work of our staff and students acknowledged in a positive light.

Recognition like this reflects the dedication, commitment, and passion that our entire school community brings every day. From our talented students to our supportive families and exceptional staff, this work is very much a collective one. It is always positive to be recognised alongside so many other schools across the region working hard for our children. The article is here:

Assemblies for Years 7–11 this week have focused on supporting student wellbeing, led by Ms Malik and Ms Burch. As a school, we continue to prioritise wellbeing both through targeted pastoral support and within our curriculum, ensuring students are equipped with the tools and understanding to look after themselves and others.

Our Year 11's are now in the final push towards exams, with some exams already done! We wish them every success as they start the full round of exams from next week. I am extremely proud of all their hard work. The students have conducted themselves in a calm, purposeful and focused manner; it has been encouraging to see them attending their exams and preparation sessions with such a positive mindset. Hundreds of intervention sessions have been attended across the year group, so I also thank teachers and staff for providing this support. As they now enter the exam season, the hard work continues before their celebration at the end-of-year Prom.

A group of Year 8 students visited Mays Farm in Ringmer as part of a Pilot Farm School Twinning project. They represented the school exceptionally well, demonstrating maturity, curiosity and respect throughout the visit. The project, funded by the local Food Partnership Trust, is being evaluated by the University of Sussex to understand its impact on students. During the visit, students explored food production, the connection between farming and consumption, animal care, sustainability, and land management. This was the first of four planned visits across the seasons this year.

I hope you have a great weekend.

    Best wishes,

    Mr Harvey

Design Technology Department – Year 8

Year 8 have been learning about Art Nouveau and the work of Louis Comfort Tiffany. Using their research, they designed their own CAD design to go onto their own LED light, of which they soldered their own circuit. Lots of happy faces and superb outcomes! Well done year 8!

    Farm twinning Visit – 21 April 2026

Ten students from year 8 visited Mays Farm in Ringmer as part of a Pilot Farm School Twinning project. The project has been funded by the local Food Partnership Trust and as this is a pilot project, the University of Sussex is recording the impact of the visit on the students.

The visit has been designed so that students are able to learn about food production and link farming with food consumption. They will learn about the roles of animals in farming, animal care, sustainability, nature and land management. This was the first of 4 planned visits to take place over the 4 seasons this year.

We walked to the farm from the school, which took just under 20 minutes across built on green field, arable land and a small lane to the farm. Maxine from Mays farm and Jo from LEAF (Liking Environment and Farming) conducted a very educational session over the course of the morning giving students the opportunity to handle and learn about different elements in food production and farming, including biosafety, collecting eggs, feeding the chickens, seeing a broody hen sitting on eggs and experiencing seeing a chick trying to break out of its shell. The students experienced feeding an orphan calf and learnt how the cows breed on this farm. We had a good look at a pygmy goat which was a little boisterous so we were unable to handle it. We helped Maxine plant out her courgette plants and test the PH level of the soil.  We will be visiting again in the late summer to see how things have changed and grown. Students looked the part in newly acquired wellies and waterproofs kindly donated by the Ernest Cook Trust.

Art Department – Old magazine requests

If anyone has any old magazines, on any subject, we would love them in school!

The Art Department uses images for collage, doodling, printing, origami and many more activities.  There are also several other areas in the school which use magazines for projects throughout the year, including Eco and welfare. Please drop anything you have in to Reception. Many thanks

    Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope you had a wonderful Easter break.

It has been a real pleasure welcoming students back to school this term. They have returned exceptionally well, and it has been great hearing their stories and experiences from the holidays. There is a real sense of positivity across the school as we begin the summer term.

Over the past week, I have been delivering assemblies focused on ‘being the best version of yourself’, linked closely to our core values of Honesty, Faith and Courage. We explored how individuals and societies continually strive to improve and push boundaries, including looking at the Artemis II mission as a powerful example of human ambition and progress. The message to students was simple but important: improvement comes from effort, reflection and the choices we make every day.

I have also been very impressed with our Year 10 students, who have begun their mock examinations. Their focus, maturity and motivation have been excellent, and they are setting a strong example as they prepare for the challenges ahead.

It was fantastic to see so many entries from our students in the Ringmer Village Show, with further details included in this newsletter. The show is a Royal Horticultural Society affiliated event that celebrates the talents of the local community in areas such as horticulture, cookery, crafts and produce.

Our students entered a range of categories including baking and art, and I was particularly pleased to see Mrs Simon-House, our ECO Coordinator, enter purple sprouting broccoli grown here at school. Impressively, all entries were judged at adult level, meaning our students were competing against participants of all ages – a fantastic achievement and a real testament to their creativity and commitment.

There is much to look forward to in the coming weeks:

    • Year 11 GCSE Examinations – A significant milestone in our students’ lives. We will continue to support them every step of the way during this important period.

    • Enrichment Week – An exciting opportunity for students to experience new activities, develop skills and engage with learning beyond the classroom.

    • Sports Day – Always a highlight of the school calendar, where we see outstanding participation, teamwork and school spirit.

    • Student Leadership Interviews – I am very much looking forward to meeting students who are aspiring to take on leadership roles within our school community.

    • Year 9 Big Futures Careers Fair – This event provides hands-on experiences and the chance for students to explore a wide range of future pathways and opportunities.

As always, thank you for your continued support. By working together, we can ensure that all students continue to grow, succeed and become the very best version of themselves.

    Best wishes,

    Mr Harvey

    Bienvenue au café!

Year 8 French students have been writing and performing role plays in a café this week, combining transactional French with "small talk" and acting skills.  It has been fantastic to see them grow in confidence and manage to complete this task in their second language. Bravo à tous!

Students entered baking and art classes and Mrs Simon-House, ECO Coordinator, entered some of the purple sprouting broccoli we grew at school. All classes were entered at adult level, so we were competing with people of all ages.

We were thrilled to be awarded prizes for all the categories we entered. Judging is done anonymously and seriously, so it is a very fair competition.

Chartwells – STOP Food Waste Day – 29 April 2026

We are working with Chartwells, our catering company, to promote the Stop Food Waste Day this year.

Stop Food Waste Day is a Compass Group initiative aiming to ignite change regarding the global food waste issue. We do this by drawing attention to food waste problems, while at the same time educating and engaging with our students on why food waste is an issue, and what can be done to prevent unnecessary waste. Schools in the UK throw away around 80,000 tonnes of food every year and as it is the 10th anniversary of Stop Food Waste Day, we want to make a big impact this year!

We will be in school for a Stop Food Waste Day, which is on 29th April at lunchtime to have a pop-up stand and let students sample Oven-Baked BBQ Potato Peeling Crisps from our Waste Warrior Recipe Book.  Ellyn, our nutritionist, will also be coming along and will be able to speak to the students about the samples that will be on offer.

We hope lots of our students will join in and take part in this event.

    Dear Parents and Carers,

As we come to the end of the Easter term, I would like to take a moment to reflect on what has been another highly successful and rewarding period for our school community. Our students have been brilliant throughout the term, demonstrating commitment, resilience, and a positive attitude to their learning. We are incredibly proud of all that they have achieved.

I would like to extend a special message of encouragement to our Year 11 students, who are now entering the important revision period leading up to their GCSE examinations. We wish them the very best of luck as they prepare. To support them, the school will be offering a wide range of revision sessions over the holidays, and I would like to thank our staff for their dedication in providing these valuable opportunities.

It has also been fantastic to see students return from recent trips to Barcelona and Lyon, full of positive stories and memorable experiences. Opportunities like these are an important part of school life, and we are delighted to be able to offer them.

A reminder that on the final day of term, Friday 27th, school will finish at 12:10pm. School buses are expected to depart at approximately 12:15pm. This day will be normal school uniform.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support this term. We wish you and your families a restful and enjoyable Easter break.

    Best wishes,

    Mr Harvey

Music Department – Piano Man Masterclass

On Wednesday 18 March, seven of our fantastic piano players from Year 7, 8 and 9 were joined via video link by Richard Meyrick, international piano soloist and teacher. This was a free masterclass in which students performed a piece and Richard gave constructive feedback on their playing. This was both an extremely exciting opportunity, but also one that requires real resilience as students have to try and improve their work on the spot. They also have to then try and perform the music straight away with the new changes, instead of having time to go away and practice as they might with a usual lesson.

It was such a treat for our students to hear their own pieces being performed by a musician of such a high calibre, and I was really impressed by the positivity the students showed as well as being great ambassadors for the school. Well done to Martha, Olivia, Sam, Rosie and Bess for playing so well!

Redevelopment of the Eco Hub garden

It’s been a privilege to have Ali and Milly from the Railway Land Project, Lewes working with students in the Eco Hub Garden this term. The UK recognises the huge decline in biodiversity since the 1970’s and school grounds estates combined cover an area approximately the size of Birmingham city. Schools are being encouraged to improve the attraction for different species of native plants and animal species by increasing the habitat opportunities in their school grounds and increasing the biodiversity.

We are incredibly fortunate to have been able to receive this fully funded project thanks to the Railway Land Project which, in turn, is funded by the National Lottery. Their aim is to leave a legacy that can be enjoyed and cared for by students and provide a sanctuary for these plants and creatures that will flourish here. Working outside and being in nature is proven to aid human mental and physical wellbeing, and whilst society is faced with these challenges, we hope we can create a space in school to encourage students' connection with nature and the outdoors.

We have been especially fortunate to have received voluntary help from the South East's pond expert, "Pete the Pond", accompanied by Mango the parrot, who not only provided us with his expertise, an amazing pond liner and new native pond plants, but he also helped the students dig out the huge hole with plant shelving and a bog feature.  It still looks quite raw and the project is not complete yet, but here are some in-progress photos of the work so far! Updates to follow. Please visit www.railwaylandproject.org/nature-links

Apprenticeship Assembly and Workshop year 10 and 11 students

As part of preparing students for life after GCSE's this week, we had a visit from Lawrie Alford from LATC Apprenticeships, who delivered a dynamic assembly to our year 10 and 11 students.

This was followed by a workshop for students who wanted to find out more about apprenticeships, either after school or in the future.

The workshop was engaging and meaningful and covered the following:

    • Where to look and apply for an apprenticeship

    • Prepare for future apprenticeship applications

    • What employers are looking for

    • Mock Assessment / interview

Lawrie gave some fantastic feedback on the students that took part.

''This was a really engaging group. Excellent involvement and thought-provoking questions, we covered a lot of ground. Brilliant example of students from Kings. It was an absolute pleasure''.

  • KAR Newsletter 13/03/2026

    Published 16/03/26

    Dear parents and carers,

It has been another busy and rewarding week in school, with students embracing a wide range of opportunities both in and beyond the classroom.

Our Change Ambassador students enjoyed a very worthwhile visit to Lewes Priory on Tuesday morning, where they met with Priory’s Eco students. The visit included a tour of the school and its environmental work, a Q&A session between both schools, a debate, and some upcycling crafts.

It was a valuable opportunity for our students to share some of our own sustainability and climate achievements, while also reflecting on the challenges we face, many of which were similar in both schools. During the debate, students thoughtfully explored both the positives and negatives of AI, presenting their ideas with maturity and confidence. The morning concluded with an upcycling activity, where many students used ring pulls to create keyrings and bracelets. Priory are keen to come and visit our school, and we look forward to welcoming them in the future.

This week also sees our MFL visits to Barcelona and Lyon, and we wish all students and staff involved a wonderful experience. These visits are a fantastic chance for students to live out our vision of becoming well-rounded individuals, while gaining opportunities and success on a global stage.

This evening, we are pleased to welcome Year 11 parents and carers for our second Route to Success Evening, where we will offer further support and guidance ahead of the GCSE examinations. We are very proud of the effort Year 11 students have shown, particularly in their recent mock examinations, and we look forward to working together to help them continue to succeed.

We would also like to congratulate our Year 11 geographers, who represented the school brilliantly on their recent geography field trip to Seaford Beach. The trip enabled 29 students to complete the required physical fieldwork enquiry ahead of Paper 3. Students collected data to investigate the question: “Is coastal management effective in Seaford?” Their conduct and engagement were excellent throughout.

Well done too to our Year 10 students, who were working through their Art and Photography mock examinations last week. It was wonderful to see such motivation, creativity and determination, with students working hard and showing real commitment to their studies.

Finally, last week some of our Year 10 and 11 students, accompanied by their parents, attended an insightful Oxbridge Conference at Roedean School in Brighton.

The conference aimed to raise awareness of the opportunities available for undergraduate study at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, to help students understand the admissions process, learn how to build a competitive application, and gain insight into undergraduate life from current students. Following the presentation, the panel offered invaluable advice during a detailed Q&A session. It gave our students a meaningful insight into the unique academic environments of these universities and a realistic preview of undergraduate study.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support.

    Best wishes,

    Mr Harvey

Some of our Change ambassador students visited Lewes Priory to meet with their Eco students on Tuesday morning. The visit included a tour of the school and their Eco work, a Q and A session between both schools, a debate and some upcycling crafts.

It was a good opportunity to share some of our Sustainability and Climate achievements and talk about our challenges, some of which were similar in both schools. The debate had us discussing the positives and the negatives of AI. Students discussed their points thoughtfully and shared them with the other team. Food for thought! Oxbridge Conference at Roedean

Last week some of our year 10 and 11 students along with their parents visited Roedean School in Brighton for an insightful Oxbridge conference.
