History (GCSE Pearson Edexcel 1HI0)
History GCSE at King’s Academy Ringmer offers a rich and engaging exploration of significant events and themes that have shaped the modern world. The course is structured around three written exams, each focusing on different aspects of history to develop students’ analytical and evaluative skills.
A key feature of the History course at Ringmer is the Paper 1 topic option, "Migrants in Britain, c.1250–present," which examines the experiences and impacts of migration throughout British history. This thematic study allows students to explore the reasons behind migration, the challenges faced by migrants, and the contributions they have made to British society over centuries. It provides a deep understanding of social, economic, and political changes influenced by migration, encouraging students to think critically about diversity and identity.
The course also includes British depth studies, such as "The Outbreak of the First World War," where students investigate the causes, events, and consequences of one of the most pivotal conflicts in history. This unit develops students’ ability to analyse primary and secondary sources, evaluate different historical interpretations, and construct coherent arguments supported by evidence.
Assessment is through three written exams graded 9–1, covering thematic studies, British depth studies, and modern world history. Students learn to interpret historical sources, assess the reliability and usefulness of evidence, and understand the significance of historical events in context.
Studying History at GCSE equips students with critical thinking, research, and communication skills essential for further academic study and a wide range of careers. It fosters an appreciation of the complexities of the past and its relevance to contemporary issues, making it a valuable choice for students interested in humanities, law, politics, and social sciences.
