Photography (GCSE AQA 8206)

Photography GCSE at King’s Academy Ringmer offers an immersive study into lens-based and light-based media, combining traditional photographic techniques with modern digital processes. The course is structured around two main components: a portfolio of work (60%) and an externally set assignment (40%). This structure allows students to develop a sustained project that demonstrates their ability to research, experiment, and refine their photographic ideas.

Students explore a wide range of photographic genres including portraiture, location photography, studio work, experimental imagery, documentary photography, photo-journalism, moving image, and fashion photography. They learn to use both digital cameras and editing software, developing technical skills such as lighting, aperture control, shutter speed, depth of field, and composition.

The course encourages creative problem-solving and visual storytelling, with students learning to communicate ideas and emotions through their images. They engage in critical analysis of photographers’ work, understanding historical, social, and cultural contexts that influence photographic styles and themes.

Assessment focuses on four key objectives: developing ideas through investigations, refining techniques through experimentation, recording observations and insights, and presenting a personal, meaningful response. Students produce a portfolio that evidences these skills, culminating in a timed externally set assignment.

Photography GCSE is graded 9–1 and provides an excellent foundation for further study in A Level Photography, media, or creative arts. It nurtures creativity, technical proficiency, and critical thinking, preparing students for careers in photography, media production, graphic design, and related creative industries.
