KAR Newsletter - 27/01/23

King's Academy Ringmer weekly newsletter 27/01/23

This week's message from our principal, Mrs Williams.

Strike Day - to confirm

This Wednesday, February 1st, the academy will be closed to all students apart from those who have requested support as Key workers.  This is due to the impact of the strike by members of the National Education Union. We are currently working with Chartwells to make arrangements for any student who is entitled to free school meals and will be in touch with those affected early next week. Work will be set for all students on Google Classroom (including those who are in school) however as this is only one day we will not be issuing Chromebooks to those students who do not have access to IT. If the strike action continues to disrupt we will look into long term plans to support our community’s learning.

Visiting Author

A very exciting Friday as we had the honour of being visited by author Georgia Byng to talk about her 5* novel ‘Albi the Glowing Cow Boy’ amongst other things. Our students had a fantastic time gaining an insight into the mind of a writer and started various discussions about hypnotism and other interesting topics to potentially kick-start some of our own budding authors careers! A huge thank you to Ms Colbourne for arranging this and giving our pupils the opportunity.

Eco Committee Parent/Carer help

Would you like to become part of an award winning committee and help the school achieve its goals?

We are looking for a parent or carer, who is interested in being involved with our Eco work here at school. We are forming an Eco Committee that will meet twice every half-term, and we're looking for a parent or carer to join our Eco Committee meetings, to provide ideas, suggestions, help and advice on the projects and activities happening. Meetings will be approximately 30 minutes and either take place after school or during the day - we're happy to be flexible.

If you would like to be involved, please contact Mrs Teague at liz.teague@kingsacademies.uk or ring reception on 01273 812220

Thank you

Mrs Teague, Environment Project Manager

Gardening Aprons & kneeling pads request:

🌱We are hoping to get into the Eco garden as the weather improves, but with the Ringmer clay, this can be a muddy task. If you have an old apron which the students can wear to cover their school clothes and any old garden kneeling pads they can use whilst doing some weeding with me, we would really appreciate your donation. We're eager to take unwanted items and reuse these, instead of buying from new.

If you are able to donate an apron or kneeling pad, please either contact Mrs Teague to arrange dropping it off, or call into Reception and leave it with them.

Thank you again for your generosity - the Eco Reps & Mrs Teague.

UPDATE: Enrichment Week 2023 - 3rd-7th July

Thank you for helping your child submit their initial choices for Enrichment Week.  As a result of overwhelming interest in the Art and Cooking activities, we will be introducing further options to allow for more breadth of choice at low cost.  Watch this space!  You will be informed via email when payments for activities will go live.

More spaces have become available for the North Cornwall visit to Bude, as well as the 3 day residential to the Mendip Hills.  Please see ParentPay for more details.

DT Food

Students are encouraged to bring in a lidded container for taking home cookery work. However, we are still often asked for containers and would welcome any unwanted, clean plastic takeaway boxes, ice cream cartons, sweets cartons, etc. that we could lend out. Thank you.

Year 9 have been studying International Cuisines, with recent lessons investigating Asian culture, ingredients and cooking techniques. Here are some pictures from the recent practical lessons making authentic wok cooked stir-fry with garlic, ginger and chilli flavourings.

Local Event – Ringmer Coronation Event

On Saturday 9th May 2023, the Ringmer Parish Council are holding an event on the village green. There will be rides, ice cream, a band and games. Our senior student team is working together to organise some fun children's games and the student marketing team is working on posters and advertisements for the event.

As a school, I have been tasked with coming up with a name.  Something memorable and catchy would be great. If you or your son/daughter would like to suggest a name for this exciting event, please follow this link to complete a google form with your suggestion -
