Thank you and have a great break

Well we made it, a challenging term with that September back to school feeling and without the six week summer break; we now have a well earned rest. I am so proud of the students and I wanted to share with you how well they have been doing. This term we have issued nearly 15,000 achievement points and only 293 behaviour points, which is a ratio 51 achievement points to 1 behaviour point. This is such a celebration of attitude and engagement and can be felt around the school as you walk about listening and soaking up the lovely lessons.

 

Testing over the holidays

Please continue to test if you are participating in our lateral flow test programme and ensure that you test the night before or morning of your return to school. As always it is not a requirement to test to attend school but this adds to our risk reduction. so thank you.

 

Maths Department

It's time for the JUNIOR UKMT.  This is a national maths competition aimed at higher achieving maths students, in years 7 and 8.

Here in the Maths department we are feeling very excited so have entered 70 students into this premier event and have been practising in class.  The competition asks 25 questions, ranging in difficulty, the first question is meant to be the easiest, the last the hardest!

The questions range from:

What is the value of 2020 ÷ 20 ? 

A 10      B 11      C 100      D 101      E 111

Susan is attending a talk at her son’s school. There are 8 rows of 10 chairs where 54 parents are sitting. Susan notices that every parent is either sitting on their own or next to just one other person. What is the largest possible number of adjacent empty chairs in a single row at that talk?

The challenge will be sometime in the week 26th April to 29th April and we will be running a club after the Easter holidays.  The paper should last for 60 minutes and you are only allowed to use a pencil and rubber.  It should be fun and I look forward to seeing lots of eager year 7 and 8's learning problem solving in the maths club.

PE Department – Sports Clubs

With current restrictions starting to lift we want to get clubs back up and running.  Unfortunately, with current guidance and groups still need to be kept in bubbles this has meant it is difficult to run everything for all year groups.

So, after Easter we will start by running the following clubs, this may change if we feel that we can keep groups socially distanced and, in their bubbles, effectively.

We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the clubs, let's hope this is a sign of better things to come.  Thank you, the PE team

Virtual drop in sessions with a nurse from the School Health Service

East Sussex School Health Service (NHS) would like to make you aware of their virtual drop-ins for parents, carers and students (where appropriate) – see flyer attached. The drop-in is available to secondary/college aged young people and all parents/ carers of children aged 4-19 years. The drop-in has extended opening times to make it more accessible with both day-time and evening sessions.

They would also like to remind you of their new targeted emotional health and wellbeing service for secondary age students who do not meet the threshold for children and young people's mental health services (CAMHS). The service supports the emotional health and wellbeing of young people who are beginning to struggle with a range of difficulties including anxiety or worry, low mood, stress, and poor self-esteem. Young People accepted into the service will receive tailored one-to-one support from a qualified nurse.

 

Transition Activities Week

Year 6 parents and students- we are going to have an Activities Week in the summer holidays. It will take place the week of the 9th of August and will be a five day event. The majority of events will be run by external providers but there will be an opportunity to meet key staff and be on the school site.  The week is free of charge and today we have sent out a google form asking you to express your interest in your son/daughter participating.

 

Safeguarding Focus

Everyone's Invited - A movement committed to eradicating rape culture
Over the last week the website 'Everyone's Invited' has drawn much publicity for the shocking testimonials from over 10,000 people describing sexual abuse by other young people. As a result, yesterday [Wednesday] the government announced that they were launching a review into sexual abuse in schools.

NEW Dedicated NSPCC helpline 0800 136 663
The new helpline will provide both children and adults who are potential victims of sexual abuse in schools with the appropriate support and advice. This includes how to contact the police and report crimes if they wish. The helpline will also provide support to parents and professionals too.

As a school we are committed to ensuring we support our students and enable them to feel safe in school and confident to speak out against any incidents of sexual harassment or abuse. You will receive a letter from us today detailing our commitment. We are also creating a new page on our website to support this very important safeguarding concern which will enable students to contact us via phone or email if they feel they wish to share something but are afraid to do this in person. We will let you know as soon as the page is active.
