King’s Academy Ringmer win the Department for Education Sustainability Award 2022!
The school were delighted to be shortlisted in the Education Estates 2022 Sustainability Award this year, and attended the conference in Manchester. The school teaches the students to ‘think like environmentalists’ and threads this into the curriculum, providing support for careers in environmentally focused jobs and helping the students to consider what they can do to help the planet; all the more poignant with COP27 and the headlines the world is facing.
King’s Academy Ringmer were thrilled when they won the award, presented by Sponsor EQUANS and comedian Ed Byrne.
The school has plans to use the prize money towards more eco projects around the school to benefit the students and improve the environment within the Steve Green building.
The track record of King’s Academy Ringmer is impressive. With over 20 years of work and commitments in sustainability and being environmentally conscious. They were awarded their first Eco-Schools award in 2002 and are the longest secondary school holder of the Eco-Schools award in the UK.
The school continues to work with the students to improve the environment on the school site, encouraging students to become Eco Reps and get involved with improving plant diversity and wild flower meadows on site, in addition to the teaching aspects in the curriculum.
This goes side-by-side with the many previous projects led by the now retired Steve Green, including a wind turbine, solar panels, biomass boiler, energy efficient lighting and an electric car charging station to name just some of the initiatives.
Environmental Project Manager Mrs Liz Teague is keen to develop their environmental plans even further. Mrs Teague said “We want the Eco Reps to be guiding what we do, but also helping other schools in our community to develop their environmental thoughts and ideas. There is so much potential and the current climate crisis has emphasised the importance of renewable energy, how changes need to happen now and how we can all contribute to improving things”.

King’s Academy Ringmer are proud to support Ringmer Village Hall’s Eco Extravaganza Event, coordinated by St Mary’s Church on Saturday 28th October 2023, 10am-3:30pm .
The event will be a showcase of different products, information, a clothes swap and eco information. King’s Academy Ringmer Eco Reps will be attending the event with Mrs Teague, displaying information about our Eco work but also supporting the event and helping throughout the hall. Please do come along, we would love to see you there.

We were very proud here at King's Academy Ringmer, to officially launch our Living Wall in the Steve Green Building.
The wall has been made possible thanks to the many years of hard work and dedication by Steve Green, who made Eco part of the very culture of the school, his passion for the environment not only engaged and captured the minds of the students, it also lead to the installation of solar panels, a wind turbine, a biomass boiler, low energy lighting and an electric car charging point, to mention just a few of the things he achieved during his time here, plus so many wonderful awards and recognitions, which can be found on our Eco Timeline on our website.
We also give massive thanks to Emma Holmes. Her amazing hard work and commitment, she applied for the Department for Education Sustainability Award, which we then went on to win, as well as applying and winning the N + P grant in addition to grants from the National Lottery and Lewes Town Council. Emma brought such energy and enthusiasm to the role and the students. Her amazing hard work and commitment to being an Eco-School has been fantastic and her plans and goals are continuing to be realised here at school.
We also want to extend massive thanks to Sarah Pillar who has worked so hard with the Eco Reps and students on so many activities, the clubs and working together with Emma to achieve these amazing awards and grants.
Lastly, we also wish to thank all the staff here at King's Academy Ringmer who work tirelessly to keep Eco at the top of everything we do.
The funding for the wall came from our prize money from winning the Department for Education Sustainability Award in 2022, together with grant funding provided by the N + P Group. A local company called Verti-Grow supplied and installed the wall system and the plants and did a fantastic job on it for us.
We believe this addition to the social and canteen space in the Steve Green building will be such a boost for the KS4 students, especially as they progress into their exams.
