KAR Weekly Newsletter 14/05/21

Latest message from Principal, Mrs Williams 14/05/21

Newsletter

Next week is lesson legend week as we move towards the end of this half term with a desire to keep spirits up and celebrate success. We have much to celebrate with good attendance, excellent uniforms, a real focus on teaching and learning and of course our students genuinely enjoying being in school and spending time with each other.

On Monday we are relieved to be able to remove face coverings in the classroom. It will make a real difference to the classroom experience and the relationships between staff and students. I didn't realise until now how much lip reading was a part of essential communication. We will still ask students to wear face coverings in corridors, where we cannot guarantee social distancing but we are hoping that the government will update the guidance soon.

Our Year 11s are still working hard on their assessments and we wish them well over the next two weeks as this comes to an end.

Can I remind you if you had a student in Year 11 last year and they want a yearbook, that the deadline is fast approaching for getting the payment in.

I wish you all a good weekend.

English Department – Top 10 Vocabulary Checks for Years 7 and 8

Year 7 and Year 8 students have been set Top 10 Vocabulary Checks on Google Classroom to test their knowledge of lists of words that have been introduced in their lessons this year.  We would really appreciate it if you could engage with your son/daughter by asking them about the vocabulary and by encouraging them to use the words in their speech and writing.

  1. Yet Another Number One - Episode 6

This week's fantastic guest is our very own Mr Madriaga. Check out his video on the link below and follow the link within the video to see the music video he chose. If that doesn't work then the link is included in the 'show more' information section below the video.

Please encourage our students to watch the film as it is set as compulsory Independent Learning for KS3 and for GCSE students at KS4. I'd love to hear your feedback and from any staff, governors, parents and friends who would like to volunteer to create a video or have an interview!

  1. Songwriting and Music Production Masterclasses

Brighton and Hove Music and Arts are running masterclasses for Songwriting and Music Production which would be really exciting for many of our students. I would highly recommend this for those who are already writing their own music and want to find out more about making their music even better. This would be suitable for both KS3 and 4.

Students are able to get an 50% discount with the code: GETSTARTED50

You can find out more and sign up at the link below:

  1. Recycling for Guitar Plectrums

Another call for old plastic items that I can cut into plectrums for all our budding guitarists, as lots of our students in Years 7 and 8 have been playing guitar and ukulele in lessons. This is an eco-friendly solution to guitarists always losing their picks! The cutter works really well with credit card-type cards, old membership cards, gift cards, lottery cards. Laundry tab lids and Celebrations tubs work well too! If you have any of these lying around, please send them in to the music department and I will get cutting!

Thank you, Ms Urquhart – Teacher of Music

Eco Hub

This week our senior students in year 11 have started to hand over their responsibilities to the year 10s. They had lots of fun posing with our Blue Hearts scheme in conjunction with Ringmer Wildflowers and #Nomowmay

We would love any donations of any old gardening equipment that you may have lurking in your shed! Please drop off at KAR reception.

Please follow us on www.instagram/com.ringmer_eco_hub

Vacancies for Exam Invigilators

As things slowly start to return to normality, our thoughts turn to the next academic year and the probable resumption of external exams. We are always looking to add to our team of invigilators, and would love to hear from any parents/carers who might be interested in undertaking any such duties in the future.   If you are interested and would like an application form and JD, please contact Amanda French, PA to the Principal at amanda.french@kingsacademies.uk

Safeguarding Focus:

Parent Safe – Keeping your children safe: online and beyond

We often focus on safety online as it is an extremely important focus for young people The Guardian report  ‘More than a third of teenagers spend at least three hours a day on social media, with a fifth devoting at least five hours to the activity, researchers found. Those who were on social media for three hours or more daily were most likely to get to sleep late.’

Please see the following useful link for parents/carers.  It draws together information sources to help you keep your children safe online - https://parentsafe.lgfl.net/

You can also get support for many other safeguarding concerns on our own webpage
