KAR Newsletter - 21/10/22

King's Academy Ringmer weekly newsletter 21/10/22

This week's message from our principal, Mrs Williams.

Friday 21 October 2022

Success on a Global Stage

We are delighted to announce that due to the hard work of our Eco Coordinators past and present (Mr Green, Ms Pillar, Ms Holmes and Mrs Teague) and our Eco Reps, KAR have won the prestigious award Department for Education for Sustainability at the Education Estates Awards this week.

The judges said the impact of our work is huge not only within the school but also for the community – Our academy is a shining example of ‘a Green School’ and deserves recognition for its fantastic Eco Warriors and staff.

Mrs Williams  presented to the judges as part of the final three and, as well as sharing our Eco resources such as the wind turbine and the solar panels, explained how we, through our curriculum and our Eco hub, encourage the student body to ‘think like Environmentalists’. The DfE lead judge said it was this mission and our Eco values that helped them make the final decision.  The school’s values encompass sustainability and the environment. It is a true reflection of who we are as an academy:

· Kind: To our environment, to ourselves, the planet and our fellow humans, animals and plants

· Ambitious: Aim high - what can you do to improve your impact on the environment

· Resilient: Don’t give up - small wins make such a difference, especially if everyone does that little bit more

Year 10 Work Experience - 3 - 7 July 2023

All students should now have their logins to the Aspire work placement site and should be making their choices.  Please support them with this at home if necessary. The instructions are in their PSHE Classroom area.  If they have lost / cannot find their login details they should email Ms Dormer or Ms Hunnisett.  The deadline for making their initial choices is 31st October, so that the company we employ to make the placements can begin the task of organising them.

If your child is completing their WEX with you, or sorting out the placement themselves, they must still fill in all the details on the Aspire website under 'Own placement'.  Aspire will then follow this up with the company and complete the necessary checks.

Could you help with our Future Day?

We are organising a KAR Futures Day for Year 8 students in March 2023. It will be an opportunity for our year 8 students to have exposure to a variety of careers.

We would like to make sure everyone has the chance to see as many different career paths as possible, especially one’s they had never even considered before. Please could you email faye.white@kingsacademies.uk if you would be interested in offering your time to help support our Futures day.

Safeguarding - Welfare of young people

A third of social media users aged between eight and 17 have the online age of an adult because they sign up with a false date of birth, according to new research. The fake age issue means that young users in the UK are at greater risk of being exposed to harmful or adult content, as platforms presume they are older than they in fact are. The majority of children aged between eight and 17 who use social media have their own profile on at least one of the main platforms, according to research commissioned by Ofcom. See https://www.theguardian.com/media/2022/oct/11/adult-online-age-eight-to-17-year-old-social-media-users

Lost Property

Please see below photos of lost property currently being held in Reception at the school.  If anyone wants to claim any items please come to reception or email ringmer.reception@kingsacademies.uk.  None of the items are named.
