KAR Weekly Newsletter 21/01/22

This week's message from Principal, Mrs Williams.

So once again we have new guidance for the use of face coverings in school. What is important to note is that while cases remain low in school, they remain at a steady constant and are not decreasing. I am happy to say that students no longer wear face coverings in classrooms as they are fairly static and we do know that it has an impact on their learning. However, whilst the guidance for communal areas will be removed next Thursday 27th, school leaders have been advised that they can make their own decisions based on the context of the school and what I have decided about communal areas for the rest of this term.

So far we have, as a community, supported each other exceptionally and made sensible decisions, I thank you in advance for your continuing support of the way the school manages Covid.

Young Gentleman’s Project

We have reached a milestone in our Young Gentleman's project. This week students who are participating met formally with each other, the project leader and their parents to express their ongoing commitment to the project and its values. They have been working with 'Standing Ovation’ for some weeks already and this week was a very significant moment for them.  I am exceptionally proud of what they have achieved so far and look forward to their graduation at the end of the programme.

Trip to Rampion Visitors Centre

A small group of eco-minded students, with thoughts of a possible scientific or engineering careers, visited Rampion Visitor Centre in Kings Road arches, on Brighton seafront on Monday. The visit was arranged via the East Sussex County Council 'Open Doors Project'. East Sussex businesses literally 'open their doors' for students to visit and learn about career opportunities.  Students engaged with interactive displays to discover the importance of offshore wind energy; learn about the Rampion Wind Farm story and explore how this relates to climate change and modern lifestyles. The two-hour workshop session included a mixture of practical activities focused on wind power, renewable energy, and climate change. Practicals included hands-on activities like measuring wind speed and wind direction and using model turbines to see how you can produce maximum power output. The centre uses the latest in interactive displays, games and videos, as well as a 360o virtual reality experience that takes you out to the wind farm itself! Students also discussed career options and how many different types of jobs such a company employs, from the initial application of the wind farm to the present day operation, Rampion have employed over 600 staff. Students were all so surprised by the very mild winter's day, it was so beautiful and so warm they had lunch sat on the beach basking in the sunshine. Perhaps a bit ironic as we had learnt so much about climate change...

Healthy Eating: Food Scanner App  (Public Health England)

The NHS Food Scanner app brings food labels to life and helps you make healthier choices. Simply scan the barcode to see how much sugar, saturated fat and salt is in your food and drink then choose one of the healthier swap suggestions.

The app is part of a healthy eating campaign and the 'scan, swipe, swap' take-home pack has plenty of resources to help encourage children to build healthier habits for life.
